Paint Introduction



Paint is an accessory of Widows operating system that helps you create simple drawings. It provides many tools grouped on a Ribbon to draw, colour and edit drawings.

The Paint window has a ribbon and the work area. The ribbon consists of tabs each containing respective tool bars. These tool bars contain buttons and other controls, which as categorized into groups according to their functionality. We will explore them as we proceed further with the topic.

You can start Paint by clicking at the following series of options :

Start button  → All Programs →  Accessories  →  Paint

Drawing lines in Paint : You can use several different tools to draw lines in Paint.

Pencil Tool 
It helps you draw thin, free-form lines or curves. To  uses this tool.
  1. Click on Pencil tool in the Tools group in Home tab.
  2. You can choose the thickness of the pencil head by clicking on the Size tool and selecting the desired thickness.
  3. Color 1 tool in the Colors group helps you select the colour of the Pencil.
Brushes Tool
This tools is used to draw artistic stokes just like drawing with brush and paint. Various options help you draw free-form and curved lines having different effects.

To use this Tool :
  1. Click on the down arrow in the Brushed tool in the Home tab.
  2. Select brush type that you  want to use.
  3. you can choose the thickness of the brush by clicking on the Size  tool and selecting the desired thickness.
  4. Color 1 too in the Colors group helps you select the colour of the paint.
Line Tool
This tool is used to draw straight lines. 

To use this Tool :
  1. Click on the Line tool in the Shapes group in the Home tab.
  2. You can choose the thickness of the line by clicking on the Size tool and selecting the desired thickness.
  3. You can also change the line style by clicking on Outline tool in the Shapes group and then selecting the desired style.
  4. Color 1 too in the Colors group helps you select the colour of the line.
Curve Tool
This tool is used to draw smooth geometric curved lines. 

To use this Tool :
  1. Click on the Curve tool in the Shapes group in the Home tab.
  2. You can choose the thickness of the line by clicking on the Size tool and selecting the desired thickness.
  3. After drawing the line from one end point to another, click in the work area where you want the arc of the curve to be, and then drag the mouse pointer to draw the curve.
  4. Color 1 too in the Colors group helps you select the colour of the line.

Drawing Shapes in Paint: Paint allows you to include readymade/customized shapes in your drawing. 

Let us learn about them :

Readymade Shapes

The tools for inserting these shapes are given in the shapes group of the Home tab.
To draw a readymade Shape :



  1. Click on its tool in the Shapes group in the Home tab.
  2. Drag the mouse ponter to draw the shape in the work area. To draw a shape with equal sides, press and hold the Shift key as you drag the mouse pointer.
  3. You can choose the thickness of the outline of the shape by clicking on the Size tool and selecting the desired thickness.
  4. Color 1 tool in the Colors group helps you select the colour of the outline.
  5. Color 2 tool in the Colors group helps you select the Fill colour for the shape.
Polygons
You can also draw your customized shape (Polygon).

To draw polygons :
  1. Click on the Polygon tool in the Shapes group in Home tab.
  2. Drag the pointer to draw a straight line. Then, click on the ponts to draw additional sides.
  3. Connect the last line to the first line to finish drawing the polygon.
  4. With the Shape still selected, you can choose the thickness of the outline of the shape by clicking at the Size tool and selecting the desired thickness.
Text Tool
This tool is used to enter text in the picture. 

To use this Tool :
  1. Click on the Text tool in the Tools group in the Home tab.
  2. Drag the mouse pointer in the work area whre you want to insert text. An additional Text tab will appear in the ribbon.
  3. You can select the font, size, and style in the Font group.
  4. Color 1 too in the Colors group helps you select the colour of the text.
  5. Color 2 tool in the Colors group helps you  select the background for the text. However,           before selecting background colour, click at Opaque option in the Background group.

Editing Objects
You can edit a picture in Paint. In order to do this, you have to select the part of the picture that you want to change. The Select tool helps you do this.

To use this Tool :
  1. Click on the down arrow in the Select tool in the Image group in the Home tab. Drag the pointer to select the part of the picture you want to work with.
  2. To delete the selected area, click on the Delete option.
  3. To crop the selected part of the image, click on the Crop tool in the Image group.
  4. To rotate a part of an image, click on Rotate tool in the Image group, and then select the rotation direction.
To erase a part of an image, click at Eraser tool in the tools group in the Home tab, and then select the size of the eraser.

Cut/Copy and Paste
After selecting an image or a part of the image, you can image, you can cut or copy the selected item.

To do so :
  1. Click on the Select tool in the Image group in the Home tab. Drag the pointer to select the part of the picture you want to cut or copy.
  2. Click on Cut or Copy tools in the Clipboard group.
  3. Click on Paste tool in the Clipboard group. Drag selected part to the new place.
Saving a Picture 
To save a new Picture :
  1. Click on Paint → Save Option.
  2. In the Save As dialog box, type the name of your file in the File name.
  3. Click at Save button to finish the task.

Opening a Picture
To open an already saved file :
  1. Click on Paint → Open Option.
  2. In the Open dialog box, type the name of your file in the File name: text box.
  3. Click on Open button.





Shortcut key of Window Paint :

  1. Ctrl+A  →  Select the entire Picture.
  2. Ctrl+B  →  Bold Text.
  3. Ctrl+C  →  Copy Text.
  4. Ctrl+E  →  Open the properties.
  5. Ctrl+G  →  Show or hide gridlines.
  6. Ctrl+I   →   Italicize select Text.
  7. Ctrl+N  →  Open a new Paint.
  8. Ctrl+O  →  Open default save an existing Picture.
  9. Ctrl+P  →   Print a picture.
  10. Ctrl+R  →  Show or hide Ruler.
  11. Ctrl+S  →  Save a Picture.
  12. Ctrl+U →  Underline Text.
  13. Ctrl+V  →  Paste.
  14. Ctrl+W →  Resize and Garble dialog box.
  15. Ctrl+X  →  Cut a selection.
  16. Ctrl+Y  →  Redo.
  17. Ctrl+Z  →  Undo.
  18. Ctrl+plus (+)        →  Increase the width of a brush, line, or shape.
  19. Ctrl+ -                   →  Decrease the width of a brush, line, or shape.
  20. Ctrl+page up        →  Zoom In
  21. Ctrl+page down   →  Zoom Out
  22. F10                        →  Display keytips.
  23. Alt+F4                  →  Close Paint Window.
  24. Shift+F10             →   Show the shortcut menu.
  25. F1             →  Paint Help.
  26. F11           →  View a picture in full screen mode.
  27. F12           →  Save Picture.

  2. I'm very thankful for this beautiful explanation of MS Paint. If you please explain the things like scroll bar and title bar and the zoom icons in the lower part of the paint, etc, and the things whatever we see on the page other than paint tools, it would be of great help!
